Jim Thorpe charged with income tax evasion

Champions Tour player Jim Thorpe has been charged with failing to pay taxes on more than $5 million in income earned since 2002, according to an ABC affiliate in Tampa, Fla.

UPDATE: The Orlando Sentinel has more details, including this: "The court documents also state Thorpe received at least $1.7 million in gambling winnings, which he used to continue gambling. Instead of paying his tax liabilities, the documents state, Thorpe purchased an estimated $2 million home and a $61,000 vehicle."

UPDATE II: The Tampa Bay Tribune's report contain quotes from Thorpe's attorney Mark Horwitz, who said this, among other things: "We don't think he's willfully violated the law. That's not to say he doesn't owe the tax; but we don't think he's guilty of a crime."
