How Jordan Spieth and golf played key role in the Texas-Oklahoma football game (or something like that)

We can’t blame the University of Texas football team for hoping a little Jordan Spieth magic might rub off on them. The three-time major winner and former Longhorn golfer frequently feels like he has the midas touch on the course (see Open Championship, 2017). Naturally, then, the school hoped having him participate in the coin toss during Texas’ rivalry game with Oklahoma might be a spark to ignite an upset victory on the gridiron during the Red River Showdown in Dallas.

And while it looked bleak for the Longhorns early, as they fell behind 20-10 at halftime, they tried to put on a Spieth like rally late. But they would fall short, losing 29-24.

Coincidentally, Texas wasn’t the only side that was using golf mojo in their coin toss. Oklahoma also broke out an All-American college player, OU junior Brad Dalke, to join with the players in the mid-field ceremony.

Dalke was the runner-up at the 2016 U.S. Amateur and a member of the 2017 Sooners team that won the NCAA title last June. He’s also the former junior golfer who took down Rory McIlroy in an arm-wrestling match.

So now Dalke can say he had the last laugh on another pro golfer in Spieth, no?
