Golfers atwitter

Washington Post media critic Howard Kurtz posed this question on Twitter a few days ago: "Is Twitter just a fun hangout, or do you buy the Time-cover argument that it's changing the way we communicate and get information?"

How does one answer that in 140 characters or less?

This much is certain: It is expanding rapidly on the golf front, much of it mindless drivel (see John Daly: "just gonna get ready for some breakfast and head to the course") and some of it amusing (Stewart Cink: "Sitting in fancy salon lobby while sons get haircuts. Feeling out of place. They aren't trying to solicit my businesss. Scared of baldness!").

Early returns, meanwhile, suggest that the LPGA players have more fun with it than PGA Tour players. To wit:

Kristy McPherson: "Hit a straight flush on 3 card table! Holla!!! That's more cash than I've made the last 2 weeks on tour! :)."

Michelle Wie: "Did u know that the 7-11 extreme gulp is 50% bigger than the volume of the human stomach?!?"

Erica Blasberg: "...Why is there brail on drive-up ATM machines......?"

Then there was this from Annika Sorenstam, charming for its matter-of-fact, all-in-a-day's-work tone: "Just went to the royal castle in Stockholm - received a medal from the King."
