Firestone: Day, Piercy tied for the lead

Jason Day and Scott Piercy are tied for the Saturday night lead at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at five under, with David Lingmerth just a stroke back.

World No. 1 Jason Day remains poised for his fourth win of 2016 following a one-under par 69 in the third round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio on Saturday.

At five-under 205 through 54 holes, Day is tied for the lead with Scott Piercy.

In Day's two stroke-play wins, at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship, he has held the lead by at least two strokes going into the final round. In two of Piercy's three career PGA Tour wins, he has also held the lead going into the final round.

Piercy, a runner-up at the U.S. Open, was prepared to finish the round with the outright lead, but a difficult bunker shot on the 18th hole led to a bogey in a round of three-under 67.

David Lingmerth and Brian Stuard are one and two strokes behind, respectively, going into Sunday.

U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson put together one of the best rounds of the day, shooting a four-under 66. At two under through 54 holes, he is tied for fifth with Charl Schwartzel and William McGirt.

Jordan Spieth was tied for fourth through 15 holes, when a triple bogey on the par-5 16th dropped him to even par for the tournament.

Phil Mickelson also had a tough time, shooting a three-over 73 on Saturday. He is tied for 33rd at six over, as is Jim Furyk.
