10 More Yards

Swing shorter to hit it solid

If you want to bomb it off the tee, you should focus on rhythm and swinging in sync more than anything else.

First, stay relaxed. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being very tense, I'd say I'm a 1 or 2 over the ball. Waggle, feel loose. That'll help you set a good tempo from the start.

Second, shorten your swing a little. You might think you need to make a longer swing to hit the ball farther, but I feel like the longer my swing, the harder it is to stay in rhythm. A shorter swing also gives you a better chance of controlling the club. Just remember, a short swing doesn't mean a quick swing. Take your time before you start down.

Finally, turn everything together through impact. Feel that your hips, shoulders, arms and club are moving in unison. The key to hitting it far is hitting it flush -- not necessarily swinging your hardest. In other words, if you sync everything up, you'll have a better chance of hitting it in the middle of the clubface and making good use of your speed.

Robert Allenby of Australia has won four PGA Tour events and 18 other tournaments worldwide.
