NEWPORT, Wales -- How has Europe managed to put so much "blue on the board" and take a 9 1/2 - 6 1/2 advantage over the United States going into singles play at the 38th Ryder Cup?
In keeping with how the competition has gone since 1985, when it has compiled a substantial edge, Europe again was superior in four-balls, going 8-4-4 compared to the U.S. mark of 4-8-4. Europe also had the better foursomes tally, 8-6-2 to America's 6-8-2.
Through the three-session schedule adapted after Friday's horrendous weather, Europe has won more holes (70) than the U.S. (60) despite fewer birdies (41) than the U.S. (52, plus two eagles).
Europe also has been marginally better when it comes to getting off to a quick starting, winning the first hole seven times compared to five times for the U.S.
