But on Saturday at the Valspar Championship, Brooks Koepka actually gave it a shot. The theory is, if your ball is hanging on the lip and looking like it has a chance to drop, if you position your shadow over it, the grass should "lay down" and help the ball fall in. Steve Aspinall, the superintendent Watchung Valley Golf Club in New Jersey, has tried it. He understands the theory behind it. But he says no, it's a myth. "The grass cut at .100 inches isn't going to move just because you block out the sun for a few seconds," Aspinall said. "There's also been a trend starting to occur where you spray silica [on the grass], which helps keep the plant upright. So I'd label this as a myth."
