What worked – and what didn't – last week at the CIMB Classic in Malaysia

There must have been plenty of déjà vu for JT at the 2016 CIMB Classic when he hoisted the trophy for a second straight year. Thomas always keeps things pretty classic with colorful Ralph Lauren rigs, and the look is clearly working for him. At least in Kuala Lumpur anyway …

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Ryo in his custom Callaway kits, but he picked up where he left off with these safari print polos. Ryo continues to move in his own style stratosphere, but if you want to put some prints into play in your own wardrobe, start with something smaller, more abstract and not yellow.

I always appreciate classic details mixed with modern styling. Moore’s buttoned breast pocket is an old-school 1960s accent made up on a polo in a cool shade and contemporary fit. Great balance here.

I’m not all that surprised to see this move from the Big Easy, but I don’t think we’ve ever seen Scott make this amateur mistake. Dark, long-sleeve shirts under light, short-sleeve polos look awkward and are arguably less functional than a lightweight sweater. If you must make this move, at least be sure your base layer matches your short-sleeve style.

To button or not button the top-button is a style question I see a lot of guys struggle answering. If you like things to fit on the slimmer side, like Scott does here, the top button can give your total look a cool edge. If you like things loose, closing the top button will look awkwardly formal and generally out of balance.

Abstract geometric prints can be a cool way to inject energy into your look. Here, Hend has an athletic style that certainly feels sporty. I like it, but not sure how much legs it has outside the ropes.

These needle-point novelty belts certainly aren’t anything new, but they’ve always been a good way to inject a bit of a preppy look. That said, to me this is another one of those “inside the ropes” styles. Even if you’ve got a closet full of critter straps, think carefully about where you wear them.

These guys are going to need to start face-timing each other before their tee-times to be sure they’re not wearing the same outfits. Not only did they script the same color stories twice in Malaysia, they wore them on the same days!

Sure, we see a lot of guys wear black belts and shoes the wrong way, but this is exactly how to cue them both up. Make sure to pair your black accessories (shoes, belts, hats, etc.) with a dark kit from head to toe. Black is a high-contrast shade, and most of the time, it needs to be grounded against dark colors to soften the total style. Hahn put it all together perfectly.
