What worked – and what didn't – this week at the Dunhill Links Championship

Thorbjorn Olesen
Thorbjorn Olesen's look is one of the game's best examples of minimalist, modern style. The key to Olesen's looks have always been razor-sharp fits, a disciplined color palate based in similar tones and his flat-brimmed Nike bill. If you’re after a more contemporary look on or off the golf course and don't like to mess with too much color or pattern, follow this kid's lead.

I’d call this color claret and this super-saturated shade is a great option for the fall season because of how well it works with dark shades like, navy, black, charcoal and even dark green. The Welshman, never afraid of making a bold statement, made a very stylish one Friday at the Dunhill Links.

John Daly
John Daly made a different kind of style statement in Scotland with these patchwork trousers from Loudmouth golf. I’m not sure if throws all of these Loudmouth looks out after each round cause I’ve never seen him wear the same pair twice.

Mark Nicholas
Cricket commentator, Mark Nicholas wore this burgundy, full-zip cardigan at the Dunhill Links Pro-Am and stayed ahead of the pack on the first page of the style leader board all weekend. The zip cardigan obviously maintains all the versatility and style of the traditional button front sweater, but I've always thought the zip gave this look a more modern attitude.  Either way, a cardigan is one of those fall staples we talk about each year and you'll want to make sure you've got to at least once in your rotation this season.

Andy Garcia
Actor Andy Garcia was another amateur who, like Nicholas, led the field in the "Why don't professional golfers dress like this" category. Garcia, often in a tailored wool trouser and non-ironic fedora is always one of the most dapper dudes in the field. His sartorial swagger channels a serious Sam Snead vibe and can be an example for us all.

The Pom-Pom snow beanie is my favorite winter weather accessory. The hat is equal parts classic and comical and it's safe to say no one can take themselves too seriously with a fuzzy ball atop their domes. Plus, when winter weather rolls around and everyone on the golf course looks like a dark blob of blue or black rain gear, it's nice to have a little personal style to separate you from the field.

Chris Stroud
We generally see a spike in players wearing tartan trousers when a tournament is played at St. Andrews, as many golfers put their own personal style homage into play at the Home of Golf. I generally don't like hard contrast colors in plaid pants cause they can look a little too bold but, Stroud's high contrast windowpane over his subtle dark plaid feel very fresh and new because of the distortion and gradient in the pane. Just goes to show you, there are no style rules, just guidelines.

Kelly Slater
It makes sense that the pro surfer Kelly Slater is always one of the most casually cool dudes on the links wherever he tees it up. We loved his look Saturday as it nailed two of this year’s biggest trends; the color-blocked sweater and the monochromatic hook-up in multiple shades of gray. That said, it is interesting that Slater wore Puma all week and didn’t show off any of the new gear from his own clothing line that he launched earlier this year.

Dermont Desmond / Selwyn Nathan
Can you find me two better-dressed older gents than Dermont Desmond and Selwyn Nathan! Both of these guys rocked great color all weekend but perhaps more importantly, each nailed the fit of their looks by layering pieces in the right proportion so as to stay warm without looking like multi-colored Michelin men.

Jamie Dornan
Speaking of perfect layering technique, Irish Actor Jamie Dornan showed the professionals in the field the preferred way to wear a cold weather compression shirt by layering his against his skin, underneath a super cool long-sleeved sweater. This is a seriously stylish move on or off the course! Remember this next time you go to throw your short sleeve summer polo on over a long sleeve layer.

Huey Lewis
Who needs The News, Huey Lewis looked great all week at the Dunhill Links Championship! I love these lime green pants, but more importantly I love how he paired them with a tailored fit, simple stripe polo. Any time you wear statement shades like lime green it’s crucial that the rest of your kit fits perfectly and is very subtly styled. Sure, Lewis’s follow through could use a little work but I think we can give him a pass there.

Martin and Horst Kaymer
We’ve come to expect minimal, modern style from the two-time major champ, but when we saw him tee it up with his Dad, Horst, this weekend at the Dunhill Links Championship, it was easy to see where Martin got his moves from. Horst wore well-fitting outfits in great color all weekend and used texture; check that cool cable-knit sweater, to create interest instead of pattern. Sophisticated styling from this father/son duo this week!

I’m pretty sure there’s an unwritten rule in caddie culture that you’re not allowed to show up the guy you’re looping for. I’m also pretty sure that rule goes double when your jocking for a Knight! We love a well-fitting white pant but we couldn’t really focus on Botham’s trouser because he was standing next to his caddie in the purple paisleys.
