What worked – and what didn't – last week in the Bahamas and South Africa

Hideki Matsuyama
The Japanese superstar kept his incredible hot streak going with strong work at the Hero World Challenge. He’s always been pretty strict with his tournament scripts—one polo, four colors from Thursday to Sunday—and while I'm not sure he's got the most stylish rig on tour, I do appreciate the man's consistency. Descente's new digital-camo motif feels like a nice evolution of Matsuyama's standard color block.

Tiger Woods
TW debuted some new TWs at his Hero World Challenge, his 2017 shoe that will be available at retail in the spring. The Lunar Control 3 is still the sharpest shoe Nike’s put out in the last few years, but this cross-velcro upper should definitely turn some sneaker heads.

One thing you can count on never changing in Woods’ set-up is his standard Sunday red-and-black wardrobe. How he’d play in his return last week might have been in question, but any other look during the final round was never in doubt.

Rickie Fowler
Rickie's been working five-pocket pants into his rounds for three years running, so isn't it about time you find a way to fit them into your wardrobe, too. Dressier than a jean and more interesting that a classic chino, a five-pocket trouser fits in well on or off the course.

Kjus (pronounced SHOOS) was first recognized for streamlined stylish outerwear but recently has added a full compliment of simple, modern sportswear to its assortment. In a time when almost everything feels over-branded, it’s nice to see Kjus’s tastefully small logos applied in less-expected locations.

Contrast-ribbon belts, like the one Kuch wore Sunday in the Bahamas, are a cool way to add another casual layer to a laid-back look. The style can have a pretty preppy bend, but pairing it to matte-gray tech trousers, as opposed to khakis or corduroys, creates a cool balance.

Gary Stal
Stylish ideas last long after their trendy moments wane. You could find color-blocked everything in the menswear market a few seasons ago, and just because the look may be less "in" these days doesn’t mean its not a stylish way to go. Stal’s color-blocked-back polo is a great example of a less-expected way to wear the graphic statement.

It’s hard to find much innovation in the headwear game, but this barely bent flat brim from brands such as Nike, Puma and New Era feels like a cool way to give your lid a little bit of a younger attitude.

This half-cap visor nonsense on the other hand is one of those odd golf styles that have become so stereotypically “golfey” that it’s virtually impossible to wear anywhere outside the ropes. Even SEC football coaches seem to prefer the retro high-crown looks to this new school type.
