'Major' Shoe Statements from the 2016 Masters

Footwear is easily the most dominant movement in the menswear market these days, and it seems to be having a carry-over effect from the runways to the fairways. More tour pros are making signature shoes a key piece of their tournament wardrobes. It was noticeable at the Masters, as guys teed it up in everything from standard spikes to street-wear sneaks to see who could flex the freshest footwear.

Bryson Dechambeau

DeChambeau closed out his amateur career in these sweet black-on-black Puma Ignite Spikeless shoes with the subtle smoky gray sole. A classic shape with a modern accent felt like the perfect match for this guy’s game.

Jordan Spieth

Spieth’s first signature shoe, the UA Drive One, feels like a nice blend between a traditional spike and a softer crossover. The two-tone color palate and minimal accents give these kicks a low-key, modern look.

Rickie Fowler

The best way to make a serious shoe statement is to keep your outfit super simple and let your spikes take center stage. On or off the course, a little color goes a long way, especially when grounded against subtler styles.

Fowler, of course, has helped fuel the recent high-top/jogger hysteria. If you’re jumping on the bandwagon, it’s important to note that, yes, the look and shape of the high tops are cool and the jogger is a good way to seem hip to fashion. However, wearing both styles together often comes off as looking seriously over-styled. Rickie pulls this off, but he might be the exception.

“When I come back like Jordan, wearing the 4-5…” would’ve been more appropriate for Keegs had he made any sort of run at the Masters, but that’s another story. If you’re a real sneaker-head, like Bradley, than these are some seriously grail-piece golf shoes. Remember, if you’re wearing a spike with this much attitude, you better peg-up you’re “A” game and make sure the rest of your outfit gets back on defense.

Rory McIlroy

I’m really digging Rory’s latest Lunar Control 4s. From a construction standpoint the Lunarlon cushion base and fly-knit upper create a great foundation for the foot, even for a player with one of the most aggressive swings in golf. Aesthetically, the swoosh on the toe feels fresh, and the colored lace/tongue combo is a cool detail that adds interest without looking overdesigned.

The white FJ Classic is as timeless a shoe style as exists in golf. Not surprisingly, Horschel hooked his up with a pair of tropical print pants, but even those with much simpler style are hoping these spikes aren’t going anywhere soon.
