2016 PGA Championship Style Review

The fashion hits and misses from Baltusrol

It was Jimmy’s world at the PGA Championship, and the rest of us were just living in it. Walker cued up his standard Sunday all-black set-up and rode that smooth, powerful look to his first major championship win. Interesting belt choice for the Texan.

Walker wasn’t the only one in the last few groups on Sunday to lean on the monochromatic move. As we’ve said many times, we’re all in on the single-color look. It’s strong and smooth, creating a stand-out style through uniformity rather than relying on bold colors or patterns. Grillo’s choice of the solid-navy look was inspired.

Bold bottoms are part of Billy’s signature style. Yet don’t forget, the fit is just as important in this style equation as his bold designs. If Horschel’s pants didn’t fit perfectly, this whole thing would go south, fast. Best of all: Next year you will be able to get the same trousers Billy wears in the majors.

It appears Billy Ho is developing a protégé in Thomas regarding the fancy pants. These Thursday trousers from Justin looked great.

While Walker clearly has the single-color set-ups figured out, his shirts need some attention. The sleeves on this polo are way too big and change the balance of the look. From the design standpoint, I like the idea of striped sleeves. It’s just that having it on both arms feels too symmetrical.

Rickie Fowler
Rickie gets props for elevating the shoe game of the entire PGA Tour, but his jogger/high-top styling still feels a bit awkward with his tucked-in golf kit. The banded-bottom pant looks too stacked with Fowler’s boxing-shoe-style spikes. IT would be much cleaner if he wore them with his low-profile, sneaker-style shoes.

Modern menswear is less about stereotypical fashion trends and more about smart interpretations of good design. That said, these shades of military green and pops of neon orange have been all over real-world and runway style the last couple of seasons, and for good reason. These two shades strike the right balance between classic and contemporary colors. It’s a departure for Fowler not to have that strong orange note.

We like everything about the way Webb is looking these days. The Izod color choices are right on trend, and the woven belt is an item that everyone should have.

Back after nursing an ankle injury, Koepka looked smart and on trend. The Nike Blade collar works well with his athletic build, and the strong stripes add just the right amount of balance.

What a bummer not to see him over the weekend. Like Koepka, the Nike Blade collar suits McIlroy and his physique, and the color blocks couldn’t be more on trend. Just don’t get us started on that white belt!!

Manufacturers creating special-edition tour bags for the majors has become the norm. They add some pop to the overall presentation. Callaway obviously studied some of the great old images of the Baltusrol clubhouse with the striped awnings and created this look. A for effort!!

Now this is what the tour needs: a bit of fun. The good-natured Johnston, who considers himself lucky to actually be a professional golfer, has the ideal personality to make us all smile. BEEF BEEF!!!

The Australian who plays mostly on the European Tour was back in the U.S. with his usual interesting and colorful wardrobe choices. Hend has confidence and will wear strong colors more often then not. That camo shirt makes a solid statement.

It’s cool to see club professionals in the PGA field show they know a thing or two about style. Take Speight, the head professional at Indian Creek Yacht & C.C. in Kilmarnock, Va., who is right on trend with his five-pocket pant. Not only is the look excellent, but the fit just right. That narrow leg elongates the look and is a big plus in our book.

Reed taps into the color-bloc trend with this shirt. Interestingly, too, his trousers were styled for him by Frank Fava using a water-repellent fabric. Smart choice based on the weather.
