Wilson Golf latest players iron pays attention to the small details

Wilson Golf has consistently evolved its approach to players irons, resulting in a string well-received clubs such as the FG Tour V4 and FG Tour V6. The new Staff Model CB builds on the heritage of irons used by players such as Padraig Harrington, Kevin Streelman, Kevin Tway, and Ricky Barnes.

Forged from 8620 carbon steel with a nickel-chrome finish, the Staff Model CB features a new approach to the construction of the back cavity. There the company used what it refers to as “Tri-Brace Technology” where structural steel is positioned in the cavity to connect the thinner topline to the more rigid areas toward the sole of the cavity to reduce vibration and produce a quieter, less-piercing sound at impact.

In the long and mid irons, 20 grams of tungsten is positioned in the low toe area. Doing so accomplishes two things: It boosts the moment of inertia to help mitigate the effect of mis-hits while moving the center of gravity lower and closer to face center—some 2.6 millimeters closer to face center than its FG Tour V6 predecessor. The key CG location is a component as many irons tend to have a CG somewhat toward the heel although better players prefer a CG more in line with the center of the face.

The irons also borrow from the Staff Model blades with a milled face that features the same groove configuration as the Staff Model blade.

“We listened to and worked closely with our advisory staff and tour professionals on these irons,” said Jon Pergande, manager of golf club innovation for Wilson Golf. “These irons are the result of that work.”

The Staff Model CB Irons use True Temper’s Dynamic Gold shafts and Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips as The Wilson Staff CB irons will be available on Wilson.com and retailers starting on, Jan. the stock offering. The irons will be available at retail Jan. 15, 2021 at a price of $1,000 in steel.
