For the second straight week on the PGA Tour, there was an emotional scene on the 18th hole as the winner claimed his prize. Seven days earlier at World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico, it was Erik van Rooyen tearfully grabbing the title in honor of a college teammate fighting terminal cancer.

This Sunday at Butterfield Bermuda Championship, it was Camilo Villegas, a 41-year-old from Colombia with limited status on the PGA Tour, earning his fifth career tour win, but first since the 2014 Wyndham Championship. It was also the first win since his 22-month-old daughter, Mia, tragically died in 2020 from brain cancer.

“I’ve got my little one up there watching it, smiling,” Villegas said. “She’s where she needs to be after a long fight.”

Prior to the WWT Championship, Villegas was 223rd on the FedEx Cup points list, but a T-2 finish (after a Sunday 66) jumped him to 147th. Needing to get inside the top 125 for full playing privileges in 2024—he has been playing on past champion’s status the last few years—Villegas was desperate for another good finish in Bermuda.

He got it. Starting the final round at Port Royal Golf Course in Southamption one-shot back of Alex Noren, Villegas made four birdies in his first seven holes to wrestle away the lead. He then held off Noren with two more birdies on the final four holes to finish with a Sunday 65 and a 24-under 260 total.

With the win comes full status on tour through 2025. It also comes a $1.17 million first-place prize money payout from a $6.5 million overall purse.
