In Tiger We Trust/Distrust

We've been talking about Tiger here--"Too Much Tiger?", "Manny and Tiger"--and it caused me to look over some of the notes we've got on Tiger's injury. He're a sweet one from Elaine Daley of Lynn, MA:

Thank you for the question about Tiger Woods missing the rest of the golf season...my reaction is 'Golf without Tiger is like Heaven without God.' This is why I have been sick with sympathy pains for Tiger andpray for him to get well very soon. He is Incredible.

Not so much sympathy from John O'Callahan of Winston Park, NY. I can't print everything John believes about Tiger and his knee injury, but here's typical line from his letter:

Of course, he has an infinite excuse for his losses and a 'crown' for his 'super-human' performance if he wins.

This dichotomy of views never ceases to amaze me. Not unlike what I've heard about Barack Obama in the past few months. For more on that parallel, read Ron's Sirak terrific golfdigest.com piece tomorrow on the "Jackie Robinson" moment that is Obama's election and Tiger's part in that. Good stuff.

Tiger has the best short game on the planet. All planet earth references should include Tiger.

He needs to talk to ex professional football players (Joe white shoes) about knee trouble. As simple as it sounds, the golf shoes needs to go! That's the only way he will be able to keep his knee healthy while cutting and jabbing with his buddies (joking with each other on yhe course is the smooth slimy undercurrent that keeps even the most serious, dedicated analytical golfers off the cardiologists list of least likely to succeed). I want Tiger and Nike to develop a golf shoe for golfers with less than healthy knees. No cleats, with extra...test it, figure it out, on hurt people, something you can wear around the house. Remember the white leather Footjoys with the black sole? Also, Tiger doesn't understand that surgeries will increase his problems with old Arthur in his not so later years.

Secondly, Tiger must learn to swing his driver with a flat swing. Long shafts don't swing like a two iron. The tempo is slower, the swing takes longer, and he can't compete on the Tee and keep the knee healthy.

Tiger is always compared to Jack. Well, I like to compare Tiger to Arnie. He's a crowed pleaser, a funny/fun guy but very serious...and above all loves to show off. Doesn't every Golfer?
