Golf World's women's preseason college polls

September 01, 2011

For the first time since we resumed our coaches polls in 2001-02, the same school that's the preseason No. 1 in the men's Division I poll is also No. 1 in the women's poll. Reigning NCAA champion UCLA is the choice here, receiving 21 of the 32 available first-place votes.

This is the first time that UCLA has claimed the No. 1 spot in the preseason poll since the start of the 2005-06 season. (The Bruins also were No. 1 entering the 2004-05 season.)

A couple of interesting tidbits:

Florida Southern, third at last year's NCAA Championship, claimed the No. 1 ranking in the Division II women's preseason coaches' poll. The Lady Mocs earned won five events during the 2010-11 season.

Claiming the No. 2 spot was Nova Southeastern, the three-time defending NCAA champions. The Sharks enter the 2011-12 season trying to overcome the loss of graduating senior Sandra Changkija, a four-time D-II national player of the year, as well coach Kevin Marsh, who announced his resignation from the team last week.

Methodist, sweeping all 23 first-place votes, is the unanimous choice for the top spot in the Division III women's preseason coaches' poll. The Monarchs won their 14th consecutive NCAA title last spring, continuing a run of dominance matched in few collegiate sports. The school claimed eight tournament titles during the 2010-11 season in 10 starts.
