How long can they go?

July 16, 2010

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland -- Contrary to what you may have heard, the sun actually does set in Scotland in the summer (and by the same measure, it actually does rise in the winter).

And today, it is to set at 9:50 p.m., which means 90 minutes or so of daylight remaining for golfers to complete their second rounds. That's a reasonable enough goal for Tiger Woods, who has five holes to play as of 8:24 p.m., but a virtual impossibility for Alejandro Canizares, who is at six under and playing the seventh hole.

According to the R & A, there will be nine groups left on the course when play is called because of darkness.

On the bright side, the sun is set to rise again at 4:43 a.m., so there will be plenty of time for us to all meet back here tomorrow.
