3 Steps to Better Putting

Todd Anderson

In this series from top teacher Todd Anderson, the director of instruction for the PGA Tour Performance Center at TPC Sawgrass, you’ll learn about the three things all great putters get right: the speed, the read and the start line. Follow along as Anderson also demonstrates the keys to making solid contact every time, handling big breakers and developing putting feel. Start one-putting more and three-putting less with this comprehensive program.

2:56

The Basics

Most amateurs love to go to the range and pound drivers, but the fastest route to lower scores is to practice your putting. Teacher Todd Anderson says the two best players of all-time—Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods—keenly understand this. They have different putting styles, but they’re both tremendous putters who do certain things consistently well. Anderson explains these putting basics, and why they lead to great results.

Speed Control

The first step to becoming a better putter is to pick the speed you want to roll the ball at, then correctly dial in that speed. Learn Todd Anderson’s favorite practice drills for training center-face contact for predictable speed. He also offers drills to help you groove one speed for all putts, regardless of length. Use these tips to gain better distance control and hole more putts.

The Start Line

Once you determine the speed, the next step is establishing the starting line of the putt. Teacher Todd Anderson takes you step by step on how to read a putt, from where to best see slope to what to look for around the cup. Anderson also discusses why you have to mentally shift the center of the hole on breaking putts and how to pinpoint the proper line.

Pre-Putt Routine

As a bonus, Todd Anderson guides you through a pre-putt routine that incorporates the things great putters have in common. He shares how two top putters he has worked with, Brandt Snedeker and Davis Love III, use their eyes and hands to trigger their sense of feel. Incorporate key parts of their routines into your own and watch your consistency soar.
