Because it's the cup
Watch Xander Schauffele crash POTY rival Scottie Scheffler’s press conference at TPC Southwind
Xander Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler are currently in the throes of one of the best PGA Tour Player of the Year battles in recent memory Schauffele won the PGA and Open Championship while logging 12 top 10s and two runner finishes, including the Players. Scheffler, meanwhile, won the Players, the Masters and Olympic gold, plus five plain old, ho-hum titles.
Following the Olympics, we’d give the edge to Scheffler, but now it comes down to the FedEx Cup Playoffs. If Schauffele can catch Scheffler and add a Tour Championship triumph to his resume (the pair sit 1 and 2 in the season standings at the Fed Ex St. Jude Championship), he may tip the scales in his favor once and for all. On Thursday Schauffele did his best to get inside his rivals’ head, crashing Scheffler’s post-round press conference at TPC Southwind. Check it out.
The ol’ fake reporter trick is as old as time, but it never fails to give us a chuckle. Obviously, this is all in good fun, but it will get awful serious awful quick if the pair are duking it out down the stretch on Sunday. Schauffele got off to a good start with a shot a four-under 66 on Thursday ... but Scheffler matched him. Perhaps the Champion Golfer of the Year has finally realized he’s going to have to get his hands dirty if he wants to spoil one of the greatest seasons golf has ever seen.
