Wie will miss first U.S. Women's Open since 2002

June 16, 2009

When Michelle Wie finished second in the season opener, the SBS Open at Turtle Bay, it heightened the expectation that this would be a breakout year for her. Yet Wie is still attempting to gain a foothold on stardom, while two other LPGA rookies have sprinted past her.

One of them, Anna Nordqvist, won the McDonald's LPGA Championship on Sunday. Another, Jiyai Shin, has won the HSBC Women's Champions, finished second in the J Golf Phoenix LPGA International and third in the LPGA Championship, and leads in the Rolex Rookie of the Year standings.

Wie, 19, also failed to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open by a single shot on Monday. She had played in every Women's Open since first qualifying as a 13-year-old in 2003.
