What do Grand Funk Railroad, Elvis have to do with U.S. Open? Fox Sports has answer

Step aside Yanni. Fox Sports has taken over the U.S. Open and it's playing a different tune. Literally.

Fox Sports is ready to launch a $15 million U.S. Open marketing campaign that includes video featuring Grand Funk Railroad's "We're an American Band," shown here:

This video opens with President John F. Kennedy playing a shot at Hyannisport Club in 1963 and includes a snippet of Elvis Presley, as well as a voiceover that says, "like rebels and rock and roll, it's become a stage for greatness."

"This is not only one of the biggest marketing events in the history of Fox Sports, but it may well be the biggest in the history of the U.S. Open," Robert Gottlieb, executive vice president marketing, Fox Sports Media Group, told Ad Age.

A second video features Rickie Fowler winning the U.S. Open, but not before he addresses the ball and his Cobra driver turns into a snake.

It's bold, to be sure, but will it have some longing for Yanni's "In Celebration of Man," that NBC used as a U.S. Open theme song?
