Watson's Canterbury Tale: High-tech equipment needs to go

May 25, 2009

Professional golf's return to Canterbury Golf Club outside Cleveland gave Tom Watson pause to consider the state of modern golf equipment. His conclusion: "We need to roll back the balls 10 percent and have a max (maximum) clubhead size of 240 cc,'' Watson tells David Glasier of the Morning Journal.

And while we're at it, roll back the price of gas to 35 cents a gallon. None of this will happen, of course, notably 240cc clubheads, which would be nearly half the size of the 460cc limit.

Watson was lamenting that a course like Canterbury, site of the Senior PGA Championship won by Michael Allen on Sunday, has been made obsolete (at least for PGA Tour players) by technology.
