Valspar: Bradley co-leader; Spieth shoots 76
Defending champion Jordan Spieth opened with a five-over par 76 in the first round of the Valspar Championship in Tampa, Fla., on a difficult day for scoring.
Only 24 players in the 144-man field bettered par on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook, with Keegan Bradley, Ken Duke and Charles Howell III leading with four-under par 67s.
Spieth bogeyed five of his first seven holes and had only one birdie in posting the highest first-round score of his professional career.
Bradley, seeking his first victory since August of 2012, had five birdies and a single bogey, that coming on his 15th hole of the day, when he drove it into trouble left of the fairway and had to come out sideways.
Among those in the top 10 with one-under par 70s were major championship winners Retief Goosen, Webb Simpson and Martin Kaymer.
