U.S. Open 2024: Sepp Straka is the leader in the clubhouse for bad break of the week after this flagstick nightmare

    June 14, 2024

As we've seen plenty already at Pinehurst, even shots that are just slightly off pay a severe price. So imagine the pain you'd feel getting penalized for hitting a great shot there?

Such was the situation Sepp Straka found himself on Friday morning. After a nice tee shot on the par-4 third, the two-time PGA Tour winner was left with just a wedge from 139 yards. And he hit it a perfect one. As it turns out, too perfect.

Straka's ball ricocheted off the flagstick and then rolled all the way back off the green and into a bunker. From there, things didn't get better as he went from possibly making a kick-in-birdie to get into red figures to making a disastrous triple bogey. Have a look, if you can handle watching such a bad break:

You wouldn't think a shot off the flagstick could sound so hideous. Ts & Ps to Straka—and all the Straka bettors out there. That's brutal.

The UGA Bulldog is known for being a Diet Coke fiend, but he might need something stronger to try to get over that.
