UCF Challenge Day 1: A different Dukie shines
In the head-to-head battle between Duke's Amanda Blumenherst and Arkansas' Stacy Lewis, it was th[
e Blue Devil standout who claimed the first-round edge at the UCF Challenge. Blumenherst made two birdies and an eagle before bogeying the final hole at Red Tail GC in Sorrento, Fla., to finish at three-under 69. Lewis made a birdie on the second hole, bogeyed No. 6 and then birdied the 16th and 17th holes for a two-under 70.
Meanwhile, the individual leader was a different Dukie, sophomore Alison Whitaker, who posted a career-low seven-under 65 in round 1 (to was also a women's competitive course record at Red Tail). The Australian was one over par through five holes before making eight birdies in her final 13 holes.
The scores from Whitaker and Blumenherst helped leave top-ranked Duke in second place as a team (seven-under 281), trailing Southern California by one shot. The Trojans had Belen Mozo and__Stefanie Endstrasser shoot 69s and Paola Moreno post a 70.__
