Lucas Glover’s struggles with the putter may have been a familiar refrain during the last decade, but just as common has been the praise of his ball-striking. Hitting 78 percent of the greens and 73 percent of the fairways is as good a recipe for winning as any dozen putting statistics. However, the 41-year-old Glover also made every gritty short putt during Sunday’s leader board-leaping 64—a perfect 10 for 10 in the final round on putts of seven feet or less—to capture his first PGA Tour win since 2011.

Mind you, it was Glover’s putter that saved him on the 72nd hole after a rare missed green. With his nervy bunker shot rolling out six feet past the hole, his armlock length Titleist Scotty Cameron Select Squareback 2 putter answered the call.

“Obviously, 18 was a knee-knocker,” he told CBS after the round, noting he was one shy of his goal of getting to 20 under. “I was feeling it a little bit. But I knew I had to keep the pedal down. Too many good players and the greens are too good for people not to make a bunch [of birdies].”

Make a bunch is what Glover did coming home with five back-nine birdies for a total of eight on the day and 24 for the week. And the putter was plenty up to the challenge on Sunday as he gained 2.5 strokes on the field on the greens on Sunday.

“I knew it was in there,” Glover said once the win was official. “I just had to clean up my brain a little bit, I guess, and just hit some shots and just play golf. But I never lost sight of believing I could do this and win again. Probably the most gratifying thing is I proved myself right and I proved a lot of other people wrong.”

The veteran put up those kinds of numbers with a mixed bag of tools from Mizuno (irons), Srixon (driver), Titleist (wedges, utility iron) and Ping (3-wood).
