Smoking at Augusta

April 08, 2009

Among the revelations from Billy Payne's State of the Masters address today was the fact that "no smoking will be allowed in seating areas or observation stands around the course," the Augusta Chronicle reports.

It brings to mind the time that former Masters chairman Jackson Stephens was asked in his pre-Masters news conference whether the National would follow the lead of other courses around the country and become a no-smoking course. Stephens, without saying a word, simply slid a pack of cigarettes from his shirt pocket, then put it back in.
