Shane Lowry tells Rory McIlroy's caddie he might top his tee shot, promptly tops his tee shot

April 24, 2025

It's never a good thing to have too many swing thoughts in your head over the ball. It's even worse when they're of the negative variety.

This is true even among the best players in the world, something we saw play out on Wednesday at the Zurich Classic.

For some reason, Shane Lowry had a feeling he was going to top his opening tee shot and he mentioned as much to Rory McIlroy's caddie, Harry Diamond. And what did Lowry do moments later? Top his opening tee shot. See for yourself:

Woof, that's rough. "Ohhhh, f---ing hell," Lowry says after the embarrassing shot that had everyone around him cracking up, including his teammate this week, before taking a mulligan. "I'm not sure I want to hit this."

On the bright side, we should mention that this was just a practice round. And that Shane has Rory as a partner once the real tournament starts on Thursday. And he's pretty darn good. In fact, the two are the defending champs at this event.

"I just said that to Harry as well," Lowry continued in the clip.

"Yeah, he said, 'Shane just said, 'Imagine he tops this,'" McIlroy responded.

"Oh my god," Lowry replied.

Just breathe, Shane. And try not to think too much on that first tee today. Or, at least, try to think about literally anything other than that topped shot.
