PGA Championship 2024: Min Woo Lee celebrates three chip-ins at Valhalla with awesome homemade highlight video
Andrew Redington
After shooting a disappointing one-over 72 during Thursday’s opening round at the 2024 PGA Championship, Min Woo Lee got things, well, cooking on Friday. (He does like to go by the nickname "Chef.") Lee has his wedges to thank for his second-round 66, in which he chipped in for birdie not once, not twice, but three times at Valhalla Golf Club.
When he was done with his round, Lee showed off another skill: film editing—as he put together this video compilation of hole outs on the 12th, 16th and second holes.
He even gave himself another nickname: “Dr. Chipinski.”
“That definitely helped the scorecard,” Lee said after his round.
The run of chip-ins comes after a self-proclaimed cold-streak around the greens for Lee. “The last couple weeks I haven't chipped as good as I normally do,” Lee said. “Normally I would have a chip-in a tournament, and I would chip it on a decent lie, I would probably nearly close to hole it or be around the hole, but the last couple weeks it's been pretty average, so it's nice for the confidence to hole three of them. They weren't easy ones.”
Of the three at Valhalla, his shot on 16 was a clear favorite:
“It was in deep rough into the grain, and I was just trying to get it on the green close, and it ended up going in,” Lee said. “If you can get up-and-down there, out of 10 times, three times, you're doing pretty good. That one was definitely a bonus.”
The 66 on Friday moved him up considerably on the leaderboard. But at T-29, eight shots behind the leader, Xander Schauffele, Lee knows he has to rely on better iron play to continue making ground – despite how entertaining the chip-ins are.
“I think my iron play needs to be a bit better. Again, the chip-ins were great. Iron play wasn't that good. Made up for it with the chipping,” Lee said. “Just got to lock in with the irons a bit more.”
