PGA Championship 2021: Tour pro hits ball directly into trash can, gives trash-can ball to lucky (?) fan
As far as metaphors go, Sebastian Munoz has almost certainly experienced less darker ones than the one he experienced on the 18th hole at Kiawah Island on Thursday.
Eight holes into his opening round of the 2021 PGA Championship, Munoz had made it through Kiawah's late-back nine gauntlet at one over for the day. At the par-4 18th, the 28-year-old Colombian badly pulled his drive toward the grandstands down the left side of the hole, something a number of players have done on Thursday and gotten free relief from, seeting up a fairly straightforward approach shot off some trampled down rough.
Munoz's ball didn't end up in, around or up against the grandstands, though. No, his ball flew directly into a trash can, an ominous omen for the rest of his week:
Again, not the best metaphor in the first round of a major championship. To Munoz's credit, though, he went on to save par, so his game is officially not trash.
After being informed he was allowed to either leave it in the trash and play a new ball, or reach in for it and take relief, Munoz did go garbage-hunting and scooped it out. Instead of cleaning it and playing it, Munoz gave his trash-can ball to a lucky (???) fan. How sweet!
Hey, it got a smile out of her. Not many women would be happy to receive trash as a gift. This is obviously a very rare case.
