Paging Martha Burk

February 06, 2009

Alex Salmond, the First Minister of Scotland, wants the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews to admit its first female member, Dr. Louise Richardson, the first female president of St. Andrews University. The two men preceding her at the university were both admitted as member.

"The Royal and Ancient Golf Club should follow their long-standing practice of offering membership to the principal of St Andrews University, and I am sure that after due consideration they will continue with that honorable tradition," Salmond said.

It seems unlikely that that will happen, though Salmond has re-ignited a controversy that won't end soon, as this editorial in the Scotsman notes.
