Men, we implore you not to watch this gif of Jurickson Profar taking a slider to the cup

July 31, 2020

What you're about to see is Padres second baseman Jurickson Profar getting hit by a baseball. But, as you'll soon realize, that description doesn't quite do it justice. Gentlemen, avert your eyes, and if you can't, don't say you weren't warned:

The angle from the pitcher's mound shows that Profar nearly decided to go postal afterward:

In fact, this happened in the 10th inning, Profar later scored, and the Padres won 12-7. So in a way, he's a hero, and judging by how Profar walked down the line, the ball may actually have struck only a glancing below on the "areas of importance." Either that, or the cup did its work. Overall, Profar went 2-4 in the game with 3 RBI, which is a vast improvement on his 1-15 start to the year. Perhaps he needed to sacrifice himself to the nut-shot gods before he could break his slump.

Beyond Profar, and beyond this game, a friend of mine may have summed up that video perfectly: It's the MLB season so far, in gif form.
