AUGUSTA, GA. — How do pros get so good at chipping? A combination of confidence and control. They've mastered the technique that's essential to Augusta National, and have the belief in it to call upon it when required.
One way Justin Rose does that? Using this coin drill. He was spotted using it from the fringe (!) near an Augusta National green during his final practice round before the 2026 Masters, and as top short game coach James Ridyard explains, the way it works is pretty simple:
- Place a coin on the ground
- Set up to the coin as if it were a golf ball
- Try to brush the top of the coin with the bottom of your wedge
Done right, the coin will jump up in the air and land close to where it started. Remember, you're not trying to hit the coin like a ball. You're trying to brush the top of it.
Do that, Ridyard says, and you'll have the same kind of low point control of your chipping action as the pros you'll see at the Masters—and maybe even chip like them, too.
