AUGUSTA, Ga. — Over the past few weeks, Masters fans have been watching the number of players in the field rise, growing to 96 through the finish of the Valero Texas Open, the most scheduled to play at Augusta National since 97 competed in 2015.
Now, however, that number is down to 95. On Monday morning, Augusta National officials announced that three-time major winner and World Golf Hall of Fame member Vijay Singh, the 2000 Masters champion, had withdrawn from the event due to injury. No specific ailment was noted.
Singh’s departure ends a streak of 31 consecutive Masters starts for the 62-year-old native of Fiji. He first qualified to play in 1994, finishing T-27 in his debut. He continued to qualify for the event all the way through 2000, when he won the green jacket with a 10-under 278 total, beating Ernie Els by three shots. Interesting it was the only major that Tiger Woods did not win in 2000.

Singh puts on his green jacket after his Masters win in 2000. It was the second of three major titles he won during his World Golf Hall of Fame career,.

Subsequently, Singh has had a solid record in the year’s first major. From 2002 to 2006 he finished in the top 10 every year. In 31 career starts, he has six top-10s, 11 top-25s and 20 made cuts (plus one mid-tournament withdrawal in 2020). His career scoring average at the Masters is 73.38, with 33 of 101 rounds under par. He also earned $2,682,805 during his Masters career.
No player fills Singh’s spot in the field as the Masters does not have an alternate list.
