The annual PGA Merchandise Show is where you expect to hear canned sales pitches, not breaking PGA Tour news. But that's exactly what came out of Orlando on Thursday -- and it involves Tony Romo of all people.

Romo's CBS booth partner Jim Nantz was on hand to promote his new line of golf clothing with Vineyard Vines (Sorry, folks, you have to wait until Spring 2019 for the collection) when he dropped this nugget of info in an interview with Golf.com's Jessica Marksbury.

"He’s going to play in a tour event," Nantz told Marksbury of the former Dallas Cowboys quaterback. "He’s going to get an exemption in the next -- let’s just say two months. So he’s going to put it out there on the line."

Celebrities getting sponsor exemptions into Web.com Tour events has happened several times in recent history, most recently with Stephen Curry shooting a pair of 74s and missing the cut at the Ellie Mae Classic. But the PGA Tour is a different story.

In the next two months leading up to the Masters, the non-World Golf Championships on the PGA Tour schedule are the Waste Management Open, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (where he's played as an amateur), Genesis Open, Honda Classic, Puerto Rico Open Charity Day (Which isn't an official PGA Tour event this year), Valspar Championship, Arnold Palmer Invitational, Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, and Houston Open.

Romo has carried an impressive plus-3 handicap index in the past and has tried several times to qualify for the U.S. Open, including last year when he shot 75 and failed to advance past local qualifying. According to Nantz, the "golf fanatic" also carries a putter into the broadcast booth during NFL games and makes strokes during commercials. Now we wait to find out what tournament Romo will get to put all that extra short-game practice to work.
