Mission accomplished. Rory McIlroy’s chase for a sixth career Race to Dubai title, matching Seve Ballesteros for second most in the history of the DP World Tour, was a virtual certainty heading into the Old World circuit’s season finale. But what the 35-year-old Northern Irishman really wanted was victory in the DP World Tour Championship as well. And that’s what he got on Sunday at the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai. With a closing three-under 69, McIlroy finished at 15-under 273 total, two shots better than Rasmus Hojgaard to win this tournament for the third time in his career.

In a season where McIlroy has frustratingly seen several important titles slip away in the final holes, that was not the case to close out the 2024 DP World Tour season.

“I”ve been through a lot this year, professionally and personally,” McIlroy said, holding back tears. “It feels like a fitting end to 2024. I’ve persevered this year a lot, I’ve had close calls and wasn’t able to get it done, so to be able to get it over the line, it means a lot.”

The victory, and its impact on his career legacy, is what McIlroy craved. But there was also a lucrative reward for his accomplishment. McIlroy’s prize money payout for the tournament win was $3 million from a overall purse of $10 million. He also earned another $2 million for winning the season-long title. McIlroy’s career earnings on the DP World Tour are now just shy of €60 million (€59,833,086.59 to be precise). the next closest competitor is Lee Westwood at €38.8 million.
