Tom Fazio (1997)

Except for its secondary rough of native grasses, Flint Hills National has little in common with the actual Flint Hills in Kansas, a geological formation of tallgrass prairie plateaus amidst rocky buttes. The softly-rolling Tom Fazio design has over 5,500 transplanted trees, including cedars, maples, pin oaks, pines, redbuds, willows and even 60-foot-tall cottonwoods. Not surprisingly, the club has a full-time arborist. Several long lakes dominate play, especially on the opening and closing holes. The slick, heavily contoured greens are tougher even than those at No. 27 Prairie Dunes, which is less than an hour away.

Panelist comments, Flint Hills National:

“Doesn't get much better than this. Course has really matured. Trees and plants have all grown, and some new back tees are making sure the course keeps up with technology. Greens are enormous with at least 10 hole locations on most, which offers great variety and changes some holes from relatively easy to very difficult.”

“One great trend with this course is the emphasis on drying the fairways and greens, to make it faster. It was certainly a faster course than the last time I rated the course. Wonderful experience -- classy yet relaxed atmosphere makes it a Midwestern classic.”

“There is an imbalance of dogleg rights and lefts (3 right, 8 left), which brings down its variety. It is also a non-walking golf course for most with too much distance between greens/tees.”

“Flint Hills National does the "golf experience" to near perfection. As a guest of a member, the lodging in the cabins is superb, and the steak dinner was first-class. Fits the top-notch conditioning and fun layout.”

“The more I play here the better I like it. I do worry sometimes though about the cookie cutter effect of Fazio courses. This rates highly in all of our categories except for design variety.”
