The field was blown away on Thursday at the Farmers Insurance Open. The wind was up across the beautiful bluffs of Torrey Pines and the field of 155 was fighting for their cutline lives. Ludvig Åberg finished Round 1 with a nine-under par 63 and held the tournament lead by two strokes. Åberg played Wednesday on the easier North Course. The scoring average on the North for Day 1 was 1.7 strokes under par.

Then 30-plus mile-per-hour wind gusts picked up during Round 2, and Torrey Pines rolled up its sleeves. After play stopped on Thursday, the North course was playing to a scoring average of 75.60 ... after giving up birdie after birdie in the first round!

Known for hosting two U.S. Opens (2008, 2021), the South Course actually had a scoring average (75.37) slightly below the North course, which is a rarity. To put things further in perspective, the cutline projection after round one was two under par. Over the last decade the average cutline for the Farmers at Torrey Pines is two under par, so the start of this edition was quite routine. Then the cut line ended up at 1-over. Wild, wild stuff.

The list of casualties on Thursday was long. SH Kim started the second round at five under par and only four shots behind the leader Ludvig with three rounds to play. He finished the second round with a 12 over par 84 and will be home for the weekend. Major champion Justin Rose leads a group of 13 players who shot 80 or higher! Since play was halted due to the conditions midway through the round, more than two dozen players still needed to complete their second rounds on Friday.

Golf betting experts Keith Stewart (Read The Line) and Matthew Wiley (Run Pure Sports) covered the cutline sweat at Torrey Pines “live” from the PGA Merchandise Show media stage. Watch the video above for their live reactions (plus a special guest from the NFL).

Looking ahead to the weekend, live betting will be paramount to cashing after Thursday’s wind event. At Read The Line we were on Åberg pre-tourney so we hold a great position there. For the final two rounds I do have one quick bet to add. I’m taking Lee Hodges to finish top 10 (+360). Hodges was trending prior to Torrey and finished the first two rounds ranked second T2G.
