Fantasy Fix: Why you should think "USA! USA!" at the Greenbrier

July 02, 2014

The U.S. soccer team has been eliminated from the World Cup, but hey, we've still got golf! This Fourth of July weekend the PGA Tour will be in West Virginia for The Greenbrier Classic, and the numbers say we should expect a lot of red, white and blue on the leader board. Here are our patriotic picks with our weekly Yahoo! fantasy golf lineup:

Starters -- (A-List): Bubba Watson. The Masters champ seems to play well at courses he likes. Considering he is a Greenbrier resident, we assume he likes TPC Old White.

(B-List): Bill Haas. Doesn't it just feel like he's due for a win? Haas has shot in the 60s in nine of his previous 11 rounds at the Greenbrier and lost the 2011 event in a playoff.

(B-List): Webb Simpson. The good news? Simpson has five rounds of 66 or better in his last 12 attempts at TPC Old White. The bad? He's never broken 70 in the final round. We're banking on that changing this year.

We're thinking a lot of red, white and blue this weekend.

(C-List): Brendon Todd. A sleeper no more after playing his way into the Saturday's final group at the U.S. Open, Todd has been arguably the PGA Tour's hottest player the past two months. His T-5 last week at Congressional was the latest in a five-tournament stretch that began with his first win at the Byron Nelson.

Bench/Backups: Gary Woodland, Steve Stricker, Chris Kirk and Kevin Na.

Knockout/One-and-done pick: Bill Haas. Only one top 10 in his last 10 starts, but he finally seems to be over a wrist injury that caused him to withdraw at Hilton Head. We'll be over our recent rough stretch -- and that loss to Belgium -- if Haas can come through in West Virginia.

Previously used: Keegan Bradley (Doral), Tim Clark (Sony), Jason Day (Congressional), Graham DeLaet (Phoenix), Luke Donald (Valspar), Rickie Fowler (Honda Classic), Jim Furyk (Heritage), Bill Haas (Farmers), Charley Hoffman (Travelers), Billy Horschel (Zurich), Charles Howell III (Humana), Freddie Jacobson (Valero), Dustin Johnson (Northern Trust), Zach Johnson (Colonial), Matt Kuchar (U.S. Open), Martin Laird (Kapalua), Graeme McDowell (Bay Hill), Ryan Palmer (Memphis), Justin Rose (Memorial), Adam Scott (Masters), Jordan Spieth (Houston), Henrik Stenson (Players), Jimmy Walker (Pebble -- winner!), Gary Woodland (Nelson).
