Economic stimulus: $0 for golf?

January 21, 2009

Will President Obama's economic stimulus package include money for building and renovating golf courses? It should, Geoff Shackelford argued in a GolfWorld commentary last week.

House Democrats apparently don't see it that way -- for now, at least. Last week, they released their spending proposal for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act 2009. It runs 258 pages (and $825 billion) and has only a single mention of golf, under Title 1, General Provisions, Section 1109, Prohibited Uses. It reads: "None of the funds appropriated or otherwise made available in this Act may be used for any casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, or swimming pool."

Subject to change, no doubt.
