An opening 77 put Kevin Hall in a deep hole after Day 1 of the second stage of Web.com Tour Qualifying School. But for someone who has been deaf since he was 2 due to H-flu meningitis, overcoming one bad round was easy. With scores of 71, 66 and 68 over the final three days at Highland Oaks (Dothan, Ala.), Hall finished T-10 to advance to the final stage of Q School next month.

That tournament is set for Dec. 7-10 at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz., where the top 45 and ties will earn full exempt status on the Web.com Tour next season. But no matter how Hall fares there, he's already wrapped up at least conditional status on the developmental tour for the first time.

Hall, 34, who won the individual Big Ten title in 2004 while at Ohio State, has played in 13 career Web.com Tour events, making the cut in three. His best finish came at the 2005 Xerox Classic (T-30), but he hasn't teed it up on the developmental tour since 2008.

The Cincinnati native teed it up more recently on the PGA Tour at at this year's Genesis Open at Riviera where he shot 79-72. Overall, Hall has missed the cut in all six of his career PGA Tour starts, but he's still provided plenty of inspiration to others along with cool moments like this:

In a March 2005 Golf Digest story by Dave Kindred, Hall described how he was able to "hear with his heart" the ovation he received after winning the Big Ten title.

And now it looks like Hall will have a lot more opportunities to play in front of big crowds. That in itself is something to cheer for.
