British Open 2025: Robert MacIntyre's incredible club toss shows just how firm links golf courses are

Save for later

British Open Saturday was a WILD ride that included Justin Rose's pair of shanks (!), Rory McIlroy hitting a pair of golf balls at the same time (!!) and even a happy (!!!) Tyrrell Hatton. And then there was one of the craziest club throws you'll ever see.

The latter came courtesy of Robert MacIntyre, who flung an iron in frustration after a poor approach shot on the 14th hole. Flung an iron into the ground, that is. And the thing took orbit.

Watch closely as MacIntyre's club bounces above the shot tracer line showing the apex of his shot and literally off the screen before returning to earth:

Incredible. And probably the best evidence we've ever seen of just how firm the ground is on a proper links golf course.

Hopefully, that club is OK. Because MacIntyre is still in this thing!

Is it the British Open or the Open Championship? The name of the final men’s major of the golf season is a subject of continued discussion. The event’s official name, as explained in this op-ed by former R&A chairman Ian Pattinson, is the Open Championship. But since many United States golf fans continue to refer to it as the British Open, and search news around the event accordingly, Golf Digest continues to utilize both names in its coverage.
