Bobby Clampett, golfer?

April 19, 2009

The most surprising performance of the weekend may have been delivered by Bobby Clampett, the one-time golf prodigy turned broadcaster, who is now in the process of gauging his game to see whether he will turn golfer again when he becomes eligible for the Champions Tour a year from now.

Clampett, playing in the Nationwide Tour's Athens Regional Foundation Classic, tied for 13th, his first finish in the top 20 of a PGA Tour-sanctioned event since he tied for eighth in the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic in 1994, more than 14 years ago.

A past champion on the PGA Tour (he won the Southern Open in 1982, his second year on tour), Clampett missed the cut in three previous starts this year, two of them on the PGA Tour.
