'Another Madoff Mess'

May 01, 2009

So says the headline in Saturday's Wall Street Journal. Writer John Paul Newport provides this report:

"Bernard Madoff was not a member of the North Shore Country Club on Long Island, about 25 miles from Manhattan, but he often played there as a guest and entangled more than a few members in his financial web. The club, founded in 1914, has summer-camp charm and a superb course designed by A.W. Tillinghast (Winged Foot, Bethpage Black). In the last year, North Shore has lost 80 of its 225 family members. By waiving initiation fees, cutting dues in half, eliminating food minimums and other measures, the club has regained 30 families, but it is still operating in the economic doldrums."
