Save for later

If you're just dipping your toe into golf and not sure where to start, you’ve come to the right place.

At Golf Digest, we cater to all different levels of golfers, but this collection of 2-Minute Clinics is designed specifically for beginners. Assuming no existing knowledge, we provide clear demonstrations to help you learn the most fundamental skills for playing golf.

Created with the help of Anders Mattson, one of Golf Digest’s Best Teachers in New York, these clinics (which you can find below) focus on the four most important parts of the game in simple, step-by-step detail.

Driver

As a beginner, perhaps the most important skill to learn first is how to hit the driver, which is the biggest and longest club in your bag. This is the club that you’ll use to start most holes, so learning how to get the ball up in the air and traveling down the fairway is key. In this clinic, Mattson explains how you want to sweep the ball off the tee with your driver without hitting the ground.

Irons

Once you’re off the tee and getting closer to the green, it’s time to start hitting your irons. These clubs have more loft than your driver, so they will go a little shorter, and unlike with the driver, you hit irons off the ground instead of off a tee. That leads to the most important key Mattson says to focus on when using an iron: hit the ball first and then the ground. He shares a few keys to help you make solid contact.

Chipping

Now that you’ve hit your approach shot and you’re close to the green, you don’t need a full swing anymore. Instead, you’ll use a chip shot to advance the ball onto the green and get it rolling toward the hole. Unlike full shots, which are mainly designed to maximize power and accuracy, chip shots are about finesse. Mattson demonstrates the simplest way to chip.

Putting

You’re almost there, and it’s time to make some putts. Mattson explains why what you do before you hit a putt is crucial. Once you step in, how far you take the putter back will determine how far the putt travels. Mattson shares four keys to start holing some putts.

Scroll these each of these clinics and be sure to revisit them as many times as you need as you start on your golf journey. And should you progress beyond these basics, be sure to check out our entire library of 2-Minute Clinics, complete with tips and drills from the best teachers in the game.
