Save for later

We may be out of majors, but the PGA Tour season is about to kick into high gear. There are just two events left before the FedEx Cup Playoffs, which will ultimately feature $100 million in bonus money. To qualify for the first leg of the playoffs, the FedEx St. Jude Championship, players will be competing for points and position; only the top 70 pros will advance to the playoffs. So get ready for a lot of last-second jockeying over the final 144 holes.

Maverick McNealy will be the highest-ranked golfer (No. 18) at this week’s 3M Open, looking for his first win since November 2024 and a possible spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. He tied for third at TPC Twin Cities last year. He’ll be joined by rising star Chris Gotterup, defending champ Jhonattan Vegas, newcomers Luke Clanton and Gordon Sargent, and 2013 Masters champ Adam Scott, who still doesn’t have a top-10 finish this season.

Keith Mitchell is currently No. 70 on the FedEx Cup points list with Emiliano Grillo, Davis Thompson and Eric Cole nipping at his heels. All four will be in this week’s field, as will many others looking for some critical points at the last minute.

As if destined to be a golf course, TPC Twin Cities was built on the site of a former sod farm. The Arnold Palmer design 15 miles north of Minneapolis/St. Paul has hosted the PGA Tour’s 3M Open since 2019. A past member of our Best in Minnesota list, TPC Twin Cities plays among native prairie grasses and includes 27 bodies of water, notably at the par-5 18th, where a large lake guards the right side of the fairway and the front of the green.

Vegas won last year’s 3M Open with a final-hole birdie to best Max Greyserman by one stroke. It was Vegas’ first win in seven years and the fourth of his career. If he wins this weekend, he’ll be the first golfer ever to go back-to-back at this event.

This week's winner will receive 500 FedEx Cup points and a $1.512 million cut of the $8.4 million purse.
