The question came up among the Golf Digest crew not long after Si Woo Kim lost his chance for a 59 on Friday with a bogey on the last hole
Have there been other occasions when a player has bogeyed the 18th to miss hitting golf's magic number? The media folks on-site at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson kindly did some digging for Golf Digest and came up with the answer. It is yes and has happened twice before Kim since 2003. Interestingly, both happened in the last few years. Justin Rose (despite making three eagles on the day) faltered on the last hole of his final round of 10 under at the 2022 RBC Canadian Open, and Matt McCarty (who made eight straight birdies and shot 11 under) suffered the same fate on Sunday last year in the Baycurrent Classic in Japan. For now, the number of sub-60 tour scores remains at 15, with Jim Furyk the only player to score 58.
