Rory McIlroy did not mince words.

He said on Friday that he would not play to protect his record six-shot lead but build on it, because he knows that his competitors could make the kind of monstrous run that he produced in his second-round 65. And that’s already happening today—from none other than Scottie Scheffler. The World No. 1 eagled No. 2 and made three straight birdies from 7-9 to shoot 31 on the front nine. Reality hits, of course, because he’s at five-under overall and trails McIlroy by seven shots before the World No. 2 has teed off. But if any of McIlroy’s closest pursuers get off to the same start, they’d be nipping at his heels if he gets stuck on a par train.
