Par is nothing more than a number is how many view course set-ups these days,
particularly in men’s pro golf, where 500-plus-yard par 4s are a weekly occurrence. But there is a bit of a quirk on players’ scorecards Friday at the PGA Championship. PGA of America officials have the distance on the par-4 15th hole set at 542 yards. But then the par-5 16th hole, it's playing 538 yards. There is a method to the madness; it’s a function of the wind direction, the 15th playing with a helping wind blowing 15-20 mph with gust up to 30 mph.
