New England college golf in April is not for the fainthearted.
I'm about to watch my son play outside Hartford, with forecasts calling for temperatures in the 40s and rain. This means extra layers, and one might think, significantly slower swing speeds. In fact, while colder temperatures invariably lead to the ball not carrying as far, Golf Digest's Drew Powell and I tested the extent to which layers impact our golf swings, and there's not necessarily the negative correlation one might expect.
A manageable extra base layer increases swing speeds, possibly as a result of limiting inefficient movement. After that, an extra jacket does in fact inhibit movement and does lead to slower speeds, but on days like this, everyone's facing the same restrictions.
